President's Message: Public Speaking
So, someone approaches you and says. . .'We would love for you to speak at our next event'. . . . Are you excited or terrified?
If you are leaning toward 'terrified', you are not alone. Most people have a fear of public speaking.
Through my many years of experience as an instructor, facilitator and presenter I have found that
PRACTICE is what you need;Prepare-Know your topic
Relax-Every one wants you to succeed
Audience-Know your audience and intended message
Confidence-Don't apologize if you make a mistake, keep going
Time-Stick to your allotted time
Informative, Insightful, Inspirational-the purpose of your speech
Connect-Make a connection with your audience
Energy-Don't be a statue, loosen up and put energy into your presentation
If you would like to learn more about public speaking I encourage you to join Toastmasters. We have a club at DFAS that will offer you the opportunity to develop your skills, get constructive feedback and join others who are also interested in improving their public speaking skills.
